Indoor municipal swimming pool in Constantina

Fernando Suárez Corchete, Miguel Ángel Gómez Casero, Lorenzo Muro Álvarez

Description Technical file

The geometric fragmentation of the ground plan in this project for an indoor municipal pool is softened by the presence of small curvilinear outlines that seek, and achieve, greater integration into its rural setting.
The building is situated on a plot at the entrance of the municipality, bordering on the northern sierra landscape of Seville province and with great visual presence from anywhere owing to the topography of its streets, which ascend the hill of the south-western area. Previously on this land there were some gardens with considerable vegetation and trees. The proposed arrangement responds to these topographical conditions, to the characteristic landscape of the surrounding mountain range, to the need to maintain the image of the gardens and to the best east-west orientation for the longitudinal axis of the main pool.
The entire programme has been developed over a single storey in order to facilitate the users’ route. The building takes advantage of the plot’s unevenness and is situated mainly at the back of the site, on the upper level, dominating the landscape. It thus becomes the first visual reference when entering the municipality.
It is C-shaped, making room inside it for a landscaped public plaza. In this way the volume of the complex of pools rests longitudinally against the newly opened street running perpendicular to avenida de Andalucía, allowing in the daylight from the southeast. This same piece, being on the upper level, allows for a semi-basement underneath it to house the technical installations, with direct access from the avenue. The rest of the programme (complementary spaces, changing rooms and gym) occupies the plot in a natural way on the same level as the pools, adapting to the topography, winding around the gardens and central plaza and avoiding architectural barriers in both the external pedestrian access into the building from avenida de Andalucía and in the internal routes.
These mentioned uses are situated in a broken longitudinal piece partially aligned with the new back street, which gradually closes up towards the north-western part of the plot, embracing an open landscaped space that reaches avenida de Andalucía and invites the citizens to enter. Access to the building is from this elevated plaza, which shapes a small-scale “atrium” surrounded by transparencies that give a view of the sporting activities occurring indoors. The gym is positioned between these open spaces and a more private back garden.
The façade, which consists of a single enveloping skin of wood-cement boards in a light-coloured vertical break-up, emphasises the idea of a building folded around the always present image of the existing gardens. The green roof has been designed like a façade, since given the area’s topography, it is as exposed to view as the rest of the vertical enclosing façades.
