Iconoclastic gestures, heterodox images

"These tasks of destruction are not as easy as people think", said the Information and Culture Minister of the Afghan Taliban government when they dynamited the Bāmiyān Buddhas in 2001, words which contain the conception of the ambivalence of any iconoclastic gesture featured in this exhibition.

The show brought together different approximations to the reason for the destruction of images or of the subversion of their «orthodox» contents, such as pieces which alter the conventional representation and significance of a religious image, from the figure of the Virgin transformed into a totem in the sculpture by Katharina Fritsch to the reference to the commercial manipulation of the icon and the language of the other in Dior and Seven Up, by Rogelio López Cuenca.
