Navidad en Re! (Christmas in Re) REduce, REuse, REcelebrate

Through 3 artistic ephemeral installations in the Barcelona, Zaragoza and Madrid CaixaForums, the project “Navidad en Re!” (Christmas in Re) has been on until the 8 of January 2017 with the aim of making visible the waste generated by the typical consumption of this time of the year

More than 3,000 plastic bags formed a Christmas lantern on the façade of Madrid’s CaixaForum. In Zaragoza, around 350 pieces of furniture collected in the waste collection circuits of Zaragoza city hall climbed up the building like a creeper plant, making it obvious that decorating the home has turned into an exercise in disposable consumption.

A cloud of plastic bottles were superposed on the main façade of Barcelona’s CaixaForum, with 6,000 bottles brought by the public together with the bottles from the cafeterias in the Madrid and Barcelona centres and the rest donated by other establishments in both cities. At night a lighting system trained on the bottles, simulating snowfall on the courtyard of this cultural facility.

“Navidad en Re!” forms part of the Foundation’s “Art for Change” programme, which seeks to promote art and culture as tools for social transformation. The project was undertaken by Basurama (Waste-a-rama), an architects’ collective devoted to cultural and environmental research, creation and production and which has focused its area of study and action on productive processes, the generation of waste they involve and the creative possibilities thrown up by these contemporary junctures.
