Foto Colectania opens its new headquarters

Coinciding with its fifteenth anniversary, Foto Colectania moved to a new space with greater display capacity, a library specialising in photography, a multimedia screening room and a conservation chamber for storing the permanent photography collection (with more than 3,000 photographs).

The architect Jaume Pons and the interior designer Pilar Líbano were charged with recovering the hundred-year-old establishment of “La Comercial de Guarnicionería” on Paseo Picasso, in the very heart of Barcelona, a project that sought to respect the essence and history of the emblematic premises.

The project retains the historic façade, choosing to restore and conserve part of the interior elements and adapt them to the needs of the Foundation’s different spaces. The wooden gates have been kept and opened to the exterior with translucent glass walls.

The new site opened with the exhibition “Fenómeno Fotolibro” (Photo Book Phenomenon), which can be visited until 25 June 2017 and highlights the value of photo books in contemporary visual culture. It also proposes a reinterpretation of the history of photography through the role of the photo book and printed photography. Co-produced by Foto Colectania and Barcelona’s Contemporary Culture Centre (CCCB), the show will be displayed simultaneously in the rooms of the two institutions.
