Material, form, colour... and smell!

The structure of the works by the artists Olafur Eliasson, Ernesto Neto and Pae White which comprised the “Sense of Smell” exhibition (from 29 March to 7 May) was directly linked to the smell or aroma they emitted like an added element in the composition such as material, form and colour.

The “Moss Wall” installation by Eliasson was a living work made from lichen which, when watered, emitted an acrid smell. The anthropomorphic shape of “Relachado estou atento…”, the installation created by Neto for the occasion, emanated a smell of cloves, cinnamon, pepper and turmeric. White’s five “modules” transmitted everyday smells associated with specific situations that evoked memories. Smell modelled the perception of the work and emphasised each artist’s message.
