The structure of the works by the artists Olafur Eliasson, Ernesto Neto and Pae White which comprise the “Sense of Smell” exhibition is directly linked to the smell or aroma they emit, like an added element in the composition such as material, form and colour.
The “Moss Wall” installation by Eliasson is a living work made from lichen which, when watered, emits an acrid smell. The anthropomorphic shape of “Relachado estou atento…”, the installation created by Neto for the occasion, emanates a smell of cloves, cinnamon, pepper and turmeric. White’s five “modules” transmit everyday smells associated with specific situations that evoke memories. Smell models the perception of the work and emphasises each artist’s message.
