7 Spanish projects shortlisted for the WAF Awards

There are seven Spanish projects shortlisted for this year’s top awards in the world of architecture. The Spanish finalists will compete against the other 427 projects to be crowned “World Building of the Year” and “Future Project of the Year” at the Arena Berlin in November.

This year the World Architecture Festival (WAF) stages its tenth edition, for which 924 registrations have been entered, an increase of 18% over the 2016 awards. The shortlist includes projects from 68 countries. Among the Spanish practices competing for an award are AGi Architects (Madrid), Batlle i Roig Arquitectura (Barcelona) and Gras Arquitectos (Palma, Mallorca).

Paul Finch, director of the WAF programme, said: “This year’s shortlist features huge geographical diversity. The use of water was surprising and there is evidence of a real interest in climatic modifications using novel techniques. Colourful architecture has a prominent presence and many of the smaller projects we have shortlisted will keep the flag flying. We are looking forward to welcoming in Berlin in November the architects shortlisted for our tenth edition”.

As well as the awards, the WAF includes a programme of conferences on the topic of “Performance”. And to commemorate its tenth edition, special prizes will be awarded to projects that deal with the WAF10 Manifesto, identifying solutions for key architectural challenges over the next decade, which includes climate change, demographic ageing and new technologies.

The WAF and the INSIDE World Festival of Interiors, staged in the same venue, will welcome in Berlin more than 2000 of the world’s most prominent architects and designers over a three-day schedule of conferences, awards, exhibitions and other events. This year’s edition will again be staged in the old 1920 bus station by Franz Ahrens, the Arena Berlin.

From 15 to 17 November 2017
