A taste-filled dish

Design and gastronomy merge in this tasting dish called “Beeswax Ice Cream”, a four-handed creation by the graphic designer Manuel Estrada (winner of the 2017 National Graphic Design Award) and the two-Michelin-star chef José Andrés.

The design of the dish is inspired in the cover of “La Colmena” (The Beehive), a book by Camilo José Cela. Both the dish and the accompanying spoon are made from beeswax. A beekeeper’s honeycomb dripping wax and an antique pen nib on the final drop inspired the chef in his proposal for the dessert: a creamy ice brimming with complex aromas and flavours of Vermont beeswax distilled in Caledonia, honey and lavender.

The culinary design was created for the “Eat Spain Up!” cultural and gastronomic event that could be seen in Washington DC until 29 October, where Manuel Estrada presented the exhibition “Estrada Design Kitchen”, that explored the designer’s conceptual work through the transformation of everyday culinary elements into particular artworks. The show included printed and digital publications, corporate image and packaging of foodstuffs.
