Industrial art and architecture

MAY/2018

The exhibition “Joaquín Vaquero Palacios. The beauty of the colossal. Asturias, 1954-1980”, curated by Joaquín Vaquero Ibáñez, allowed us to discover one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish 20th-century industrial heritage. The artistic work produced by Vaquero Palacios in the power plants of Salime (1945-1955)—one of the best examples of Spanish industrial architecture inscribed within the Modern Movement—, Miranda (1956-62), Proaza (1964-68), Aboño (1969-1980) and Tanes (1980).

Joaquín Vaquero Palacios (Oviedo, 1900-Madrid, 1998), architect, painter and sculptor, was a polymath who displayed a global approach to the creative process. This exhibition centres on the project that, resulting from thirty years’ collaboration with Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico (today part of the EDP Group), materialised in five Asturias power stations conceived as total art works.
