Giants with Dwarf

JUN/2018

A monkey, a bee, a duck, a tired warrior, a panda, the Pink Panther and a dwarf saluting with his hat are the seven wooden creatures, some as tall as three metres, which form the “Giants with Dwarf” collection created by the Swiss designer and architect Stephan Hürlemann for the veteran Swiss furniture manufacturer Horgenglarus.

The figures consist of pieces of wooden chairs and tables from the Horgenglarus design archive, which dates back more than a century. Some of the components used are from iconic furniture such as Classic (1918), Moser (1931), Miro (1999), Lyra (2007) and Kilo (2014). Hürlemann and his team left all the parts in the condition in which they found them; they simply drilled holes so that they could be connected with cable ties (though the monkey’s tooth was glued on).

The collection was presented for the first time in 2016 at the Designers’ Saturday festival in Langenthal, Switzerland. Last April it was put on display in one of the abandoned warehouses—restored for the occasion—of Milan’s Central Station, one of the installations presented by Ventura Centrale as part of the Milano Design Week 2018.
