Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend 2018

From 13 to 16 September, Madrid turned into a vast outdoor contemporary art museum, free and open to the general public with the joint opening of the 50 galleries that comprise the Arte_Madrid Association of Gallerists, which all inaugurate their programmes, with special opening times.

Over a four-day period, collectors, curators, directors and conservators of institutions, culture centres, museums and foundations, artists and journalists both national and international, art lovers and the general public had the opportunity to enjoy a close-up view of the exhibitions mounted by more than 70 artists in the capital’s four districts in which the majority of galleries are located: Salamanca district, Plaza de las Salesas, Barrio de las Letras and Lavapiés; a tour around all disciplines, from painting, photography and sculpture to installations, as well as all eras, from the avant-gardes to contemporary art, from renowned masters to young emerging talent.

Among the novelties of the ninth edition, for the first time Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend extended to Sunday with various activities, among them a guided tour of the exhibition at Casa Árabe. Furthermore, for the first time the tour of a private collection will be available: the Solo Collection.

This great festival of art was also supported by the capital’s major museums and art centres (Reina Sofía Museum, Thyssen Museum, Mapfre Foundation, Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Telefónica Foundation, ABC Museum, Dos de Mayo Centre, among others), with a comprehensive offering of private tours and special actions. In addition, the ARCO Foundation joined the ARCO Gallerywalk, an initiative offering tours guided by experts around Madrid’s galleries.
