Structures of Identity. The Walther Collection

Nearly 200 images by important masters such as August Sander, Richard Avedon and Seydou Keïta, together with those by other contemporary photographers such as Samuel Fosso, Zhang Huan and Guy Tillim, comprise the mosaic of photographic works belonging to the German-US “The Walther Collection” which Foto Colectania presented in Barcelona (14.11.18 - 17.02.19) as an overview of the history of the portrait, highlighting the different ways in which subjectivity and social identity are constructed.

The show invited us to reflect on how photographers from different cultures and historical periods have used portraiture to affirm or judge social stereotypes revolving around issues relating to gender, social class or nationality, with works ranging from the start of photography in the 1840s to the present day. It also illustrated the effort made by "The Walther Collection" art foundation—engaged in the critical understanding of historical and contemporary photography and related mediums—to explore the history of photography beyond conventional, temporal, cultural and geographic limits.
