Bauhaus Dessau Museum 2019

The opening of the Bauhaus Dessau Museum on 8 September will be one of the most outstanding events to celebrate the centenary of the more influential school of art and design in the world.

In 2015 the project by the Barcelona practice Addenda Architects was shortlisted from among 831 candidatures in an international open competition. The proposal is for a glazed rectangular structure with a “black box” suspended from the upper floor, an opaque space which will hold the extensive collection of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. On the ground floor a spacious foyer, like an open stage, will host the institution’s temporary exhibitions. The total area will cover 3,500 square metres, of which 2,100 will be devoted to display space.

According to the five young architects who comprise the Addenda Architects practice, the project’s most prominent feature is the clarity and rigour of the building’s parts and the contrast between the hermetic structure containing the collection exhibition, and which represents the Bauhaus of the 20th century, and the open and flexible space of the ground floor, which represents the 21st-century Bauhaus.
