Peruvian art, the special guest at ARCOmadrid 2019

The 38th edition of ARCOmadrid had Peru as its guest country. Sharon Lerner, curator of contemporary art at Museo de Arte in Lima, carried out an in-depth curatorial work through the work of 23 outstanding artists (such as Mariella Agois, Fernando Bedoya, Fernando Bryce, Teresa Burga, Alberto Casari, Johanna Hamann, Elena Tejada, Ricardo Wiesse and Sergio Zevallos, among others) that provided a comprehensive vision of the country’s plastic culture in its various facets.

As well as this presence, the country’s art scene was also reflected in the conversations of the Peru Forum, which analysed the features of contemporary Peruvian art and the cultural and social challenges it faces. Several Madrid galleries also took part in spreading artistic actuality through major exhibitions all sharing a narrative thread on the development of Peruvian art, such as “Nazca”, a pre-Columbian culture of startling plasticity at the Espacio Fundación Telefónica; the show entitled “Redes de vanguardia: Amauta y América Latina, 1926-1930” (Avant-Garde Networks: Amauta and Latin America, 1926-1930), on the Latin American intellectual movement with Indigenismo artists hosted by the Reina Sofía Museum; “Amazonías”, a novel exhibition of contemporary Amazonian art at Matadero Madrid, ushered in by a Kenné mural; the selection "Video-translaciones: Miradas x Espacios” (video translations: Gazes x Spaces), at the Conde Duque Culture Centre; plus a photography show, “Estratos de un paisaje” (Strata of a Landscape), from the Jan Mulder collection, at Casa de América, which with 108 works of 35 artists, is the most ambitious exhibition of Peruvian contemporary photography in Spain.
