Solo Houses, a fusion of architecture, nature and art

Flanked by the spectacular Natural Park of Els Ports, in the Aragon region of the Matarraña, is “Solo Houses”, an extraordinary space constituting the first collection of architecture in Europe. Once completed, the project will have twelve dwellings nestling in the heart of the countryside plus a 35-room hotel that will be the catalyst of all SOLO activity.

The unique design of the houses is the result of an invitation extended by the gallerists Eva Albarrán and Christian Bourdais to twelve of the world’s most innovative architecture practices, giving them carte blanche to design creative houses that blend into the surrounding landscape. The first two completed houses were designed by the firm of Pezo Von Ellrichshause and Office KGDVS. With regard to the rest of the homes, designed by reputed names such as Fujimoto, MOS, Barozzi Veiga and TNA, among others, their construction will start at the same time from 2020 onwards.

To complete this cultural proposal, its promoters have presented the first edition of the “Solo Summer Group Show”, an annual project that will house various pop-up installations spread around the Solo Houses site—in the open air and in the midst of nature—seeking to combine architecture, art and landscape. This initiative allows artists to experiment with new formats in a natural open space.

The first communal exhibition, which opened on 24 May, brings together nine temporary installations by Ugo Rondinone, Iván Argote, Barozzi Veiga, Christian Boltanski, Peter Downsbrough, Olivier Mosset, Fernando Sánchez Castillo, Pezo von Ellrichshausen and Héctor Zamora. This unique art show will be open to visitors for six months.

According to Eva Albarrán and Christian Bourdais, “we believe that each one’s experience vis-à-vis the works will be necessarily different from and complementary to one provided by the gallery as a closed space”.

The project is sponsored by USM Modular Furniture—which is providing the furniture—, the landscaping is by Bas Smets, the architectural vision is that of Smiljan Radic and the artistic direction is by Han Ulrich Obrist.
