The BetāniaPatmos School, recognised for its sustainable architecture

The BetāniaPatmos School in Barcelona has won the prestigious LEED Gold certification which, in recognition of the environmental quality of architectural projects and their energy efficiency, is awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). The primary school complex designed by the Capilla Mónaco architecture practice won the accreditation in February after the mandatory supervisory process by the body responsible for verifying that all the quality parameters included in the qualification were complied with.

The diploma awarded accredits the incorporation right from the earliest project phases of the design features that inform the LEED system in the order of sustainability. When analysing the building’s location, one of the factors assessed, a very positive rating was awarded to the use made of an old granite quarry and the way it was reintroduced into the continuous green strip of this part of the city through the painstaking use of vegetation, connecting nearby parks and minimising the construction’s visual impact by integrating it into its setting.

Various passive climate control systems optimise consumption and achieve high energy efficiency, another of the factors taken into account by the USGBC. In the hot months, large wooden pergolas mitigate the action of the sun on the southeast-facing classrooms, while the west faįade is protected by a brise-soleil that controls the position of its slats by means of a sensor. The project also made the most of daylight and efficient use of crossed ventilation and the aerothermal climate control system. As for efficient use of water, the project built a tank for reusing rainwater for irrigation. The materials used, another of the parameters applied in the Council’s assessment, were fundamentally recycled or recyclable products, and this also had an impact on the warmth of the interior atmosphere.

The school won the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Certification, which is awarded in different degrees, in one of its highest categories, LEED Gold. The BetāniaPatmos School thus becomes the first, and for now the only, Spanish educational centre to possess this distinguished accreditation.
