12th Edition of the Architecture and Interior Design Awards 2019

The winners of the twelfth edition of the Porcelanosa Architecture and Interior Design Awards have been announced. The prize-giving ceremony, which took place on 30 May, was staged in the facilities of Zalacaín La Finca, in Madrid. These awards have become a prestigious promotional platform, since they raise awareness of some outstanding architecture projects worldwide by professionals as well as young talent.

The jury, which comprised Manuel Aires Mateus, Beatriz Silveira, Abel Matutes, Carlos Valverde, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Andrés Jaque and Kike Karasola, awarded the following prizes:

In the category of Design of the Year, which recognises the best works built between January 2018 and February 2019 with materials or pieces from the eight firms of Porcelanosa Grupo—Porcelanosa, Venis, Gamadecor, L’Antic Colonial, Butech, Noken Porcelanosa Bathrooms, Urbatek and Krion®—, the winning project was the innovative dwelling “Gom, una venta frente al mar” in La Gomera, by Ángel Fito Estudio.

The Future Design Award in the Professionals section went to the Cimbra Arquitectos practice for their project “El Niu”. Its authors, Marar Nogueira, Pablo Rozadas, Mireia García, Raquel Toledo and Efrén Blanco, devised a food court space based on the client experience and on the shapes, colours and textures they encounter throughout.

The students Sofía Pérez de Amezaga and Mikel Goñi de Los Arcos of the BIM Master’s in Project Management and Production of CICE in Madrid received the Future Design Award in the Students section for their proposal “La Cantera: Naturaleza Humanizada” (The Quarry: Humanised Nature), in which they reinterpret retail establishments with natural quarries as their inspiration.

The novelty this year is the Special Award 2019 for best project recognising the work of new creators, which went to Ángel Fito Arquitectos. The prize consists of a trip to Paris to attend the Maison&Objet design fair and the Porcelanosa Grupo store in the French capital.

Respect for the environment, inclusive buildings and eco-sustainable materials were some of the criteria applied to many of the seven Special Mentions. The Aedas Homes developer won a Special Mention for Architectural Quality in Residential New Build Development. The Batlle & Roig Arquitectos office won the Special Mention for Sustainability and Ecology for the use of Butech ventilated façades. The La Finca Group, with its Lafinca LGC3 project, won the Special Mention for Best Real Estate Project of the Year built with products from Porcelanosa Grupo. The Madrid Real Estate Developers’ Association (Asprima) and Madrid’s Polytechnic University (UPM) won the Special Mention for Asprima-UPM Real Estate Degree for the relationship created between university and enterprise and its dedication in the different training processes. Roma-Fiumicino airport used Krion® K-Life 1100 compact mineral in its check-in desks and in the conveyor belt archways, which is why the company ADR won the Special Mention for the use of materials from Porcelanosa Grupo.

The work of Javier Higuera in HCP Arquitectos won him the Special Mention for Professional Career for his projects and achievements in a working life spanning 33 years, and Eddea won the Special Mention for its Initiative in International Residential Development. Furthermore, the architect Carlos Lamela, the British interior designer Kelly Hoppen and the designer William Sofield won three honour prizes for their professional careers and the influence their work has had in the 21st century.

"At Porcelanosa Grupo we have championed premium quality, innovation and design in every one of our eight firms. Our goal is not just to meet the needs of private clients and professionals; we also want to be inspiration, reference and guide for all the educational, economic and cultural agents that shape our society”, said Héctor Colonques, president of Porcelanosa Grupo.
