The refurbishment of La Lleialtat Santsenca, winner of the AADIPA Award

JUL/2019

As part of the 4th International Biennial on Intervention on Architectural Heritage, the jury of the AADIPA Award has recognised, in the category of built heritage, the refurbishment of the Lleialtat Santsenca civic centre, in Barcelona, by H Arquitectes. The award puts special value on the conservation of the site’s memory and the original spirit of the building as well as the architectural quality of the solutions applied, which combined a low budget with a high commitment to sustainability through passive control systems. The shortlist included the refurbishment of humble dwellings in the Ilha da Bela Vista district of Oporto, by the Cerejeira Fontes Architects practice, and the Basic and Social Housing Laboratory, which won a special mention for its ability to inclusively transform an urban area with social difficulties.

In the category of outdoor spaces, the AADIPA Award recognised the work undertaken in Skanderbeg Square, in Tirana, by 51N4E, Anri Sala, iRI and Plant in Houtgoed, for its ability to reform a space of extraordinary symbolic and memorial weight. In Planning, the award went to the special plan for the protection and refurbishment of the historic centre of Liérganes, by the architects Carlos Riaño Lozano, Carlos Ferrán Alfaro, Fernando Navazo Rivero, Carlos Ferrán Aranaz and Luis Herrero Fernández, of which the jury especially highlighted the mastery of vernacular construction systems and the attention paid to the landscape values of the place. In the dissemination category, the AADIPA Award distinguished the Patrimonio Guinea 2020 project by Montserrat Villaverde and Laida Memba Ikuga, of which the jury particularly highlighted its ability to transcend the academic sphere and boost a participative, multidisciplinary and integral model for the knowledge and valuation of the heritage.

As a novelty in this fourth edition of the AADIPA Award for Intervention on Architectural Heritage, from among all the works entered in all of the competition’s categories, A Special Restoration Prize was awarded to the intervention on Maison Saint Cyr, in Brussels, by MA2 Project, for its extraordinary technical quality. In general, the management of the Award, which is bestowed by the COAC (Official Architects’ Association of Catalonia) and by AADIPA (Association of Architects for the Defence and Intervention on Architectural Heritage), with the sponsorship of the Generalitat de Catalunya Government and Barcelona City Hall, highlighted the record participation figures and the high quality of the projects entered.
