Reform and expansion of Manuel de Pedrolo secondary

NUG. Amadeu Santacana y Umberto Viotto, arquitectos

Description Technical file

Distanced from the major works of “iconic” character, this is a project drawn up through small gestures and sensible interventions that offer the final result of a suite of subtle contributions that enrich a space destined for teaching in general and for theatre experimentation in particular.

The expansion, apparently devised for housing a sports programme, must be capable of absorbing a far more wide-ranging programme. Given the tradition of staged spectacles enjoyed by the city of Tárrega and the strong cultural demand this entails, the idea for the project was based on the requirement of endowing the secondary school with a flexible device that would adapt to these needs. A sliding door and a curtain set the stage for outdoor “acts”, a stage without a backdrop permits undertaking cultural representations, acoustic ceilings and curtains fit out the space as an assembly hall, the external light and a lightweight floor fit it out as a sports zone, etc. The combination of a few mechanisms permits the configuration of the space to adapt it to the demands of each function.

Moreover, the interior activities determine its relationship with the exterior. Inside the hall there are only two connection points with the exterior, which coincide with the more far-reaching vistas of the playgrounds. This produces a notable landscape abstraction inside the hall, cut-outs of a landscape incorporated into the space.

The light here becomes the protagonist of the architectural space: a long corridor, illuminated naturally through one of its sides, articulates the school while a wall of translucent glass brings natural light into the changing rooms of the gym. At dusk it turns into an artificial lantern for the playground, with the resulting saving in energy.

In the changing rooms, with the exterior filtered, only light and shadow passes through the glass. In this south-facing façade, only minimal information between exterior and interior is passed.
A circulation space is left open to the great hall and acts as a filter for the more private facilities such as lavatories, changing rooms, showers and installations.

The external response provided by the volumetry comes determined by the specific function of each playground. An access and teachers’ courtyard, a pine grove, a kitchen garden, an area with hard paving for the more organised sports, an earth-covered playground for more undefined and simultaneous games, a patio for those who smoke and hold exchanges with people in the street … Each playground has a different entity and characteristics. The expansion is situated in an interstice between two of these playgrounds, like a piece that is fragmented and emphasises the value and autonomy of each playground. Each façade of the new building reacts differently to the space with which it coexists.
