Progrés-Raval Badalona primary healthcare centre

BAAS. Jordi Badia, arquitecto

Description Technical file

This interesting healthcare project adds to its evident architectural values a decided determination to improve the quality of its neighbouring urban fabric, building a new public space that connects with it in an intense yet subtle manner.

The location of the building seeks to address the problems represented by a gap in a homogeneous fabric, that of the Raval district of Badalona comprising a grid designed with the goal of turning the only public space into the street. The new building gives on to a new square designed by the same architects and, by separating from the adjacent constructions, generates a patio that acts as the access, thus generating a new urban space.

The building is defined through two differentiated volumes. The first one, with a fairly opaque ground floor, is attached to the party wall and resolves the façade through a black terrazzo cladding in which the aluminium joinery is protected with steel slatted grilles, also painted in black.
The second one, the volume that houses the surgery, is a white prism that stands out above the ground floor on which it rests. A single, highly expressive mixed self-compacting steel and concrete pillar separates the porch from the rest of the public space, thus formalising the patio that gives access to the medical centre. This white box is opaque in the ends but totally open to the plaza and protected with a continuous filter made from ceramic lattice, behind which is a curtain wall that bring full transparency to the waiting rooms that give on to the public space.

The interior structure is in two-directional forgings on concrete pillars, with a continuous cantilever over the south façade fronting the plaza in which a filter space is generated between the façade lattice and the internal enclosure.

This ceramic filter, which takes centre stage in the building's south façade, provides the complex with its forceful image while giving thermal comfort suited to the Mediterranean climate on its most sunlit façade, filtering the warm southern light. This solution, which uses local and traditional materials in a contemporary way, seeks not just the greater comfort of the users but also to save on energy and the resulting lowering in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, making this building highly sustainable in both economic and environmental terms.

This south façade has been built from a large-size piece of lattice in an ivory grey colour, and the join uses white mortar mixed with quartz powder; the horizontal and vertical joins are continuous and form an orthogonal grid. The firing of this piece, which is narrow in section with regard to its final size, produces fairly irregular units and this, when repeated on a wall of large dimensions (8,620 units in total), give the complex its colour and spatial vibration. In order to withstand the stress and weight of the façade, two different types of supports have been used: vertical stainless steel frames that, in the manner of vertical ribs integrated into the thickness of the vertical join, connect the ceramic plane with the edges of the intermediate forgings; and a set of frames for the horizontal bed joints every three rows, which give uniformity and robustness to the complex. The opaque parts of the façade feature a conventional enclosure, insulation and hollow brick finished in white stucco.
