Improvement of the urban spaces in the Western Sector of Viladecans

Marius Quintana, arquitecto.

Description Technical file

The use of road signage as the principal compositional parameter in this project, together with the discreet yet subtle decision on paving and urban furniture, characterise this ambitious project for the transformation and enhancement of the urban space.

The principal objective of this project was based on the need to redefine the interior spaces of the district of Can Sellarès, in the municipality of Viladecans, through the urban development objectives contemplated in the proposals of the Districts Law, as well as other actions that have been planned, such as the public refitting of the sector. The project extended its initial scope of action, including the districts of Can Palmer and Poblat Roca, in order to redevelop the entire Western Sector of Viladecans.

A new square was proposed for the crossing of avenidas Luis Moré and Can Palmer which is meant to have a markedly urban character and to become a benchmark in the sector. This square, called Plaça de les Arts, will be the space of confluence of the districts of Can Sellarés, Poblat Roca, Can Batllori, Alba-rosa and Can Guardiola. The new square and the redefinition of avenidas Luis Moré, Can Palmer, Dr. Fleming and Can Batllori, are due to give the sector a new urban centre between the two old districts of Viladecans and Gavà. Improving these thoroughfares and creating the mentioned square will operate as the drivers of recovery for the districts, together with other actions planned for the interstitial spaces situated between blocks, more discreet but equally necessary.

Another of the new urban spaces proposed is the garden of Can Sellares, understood as the great space that will articulate and link up the district in the manner of a vertical garden, within the new thoroughfare in the sea-mountain direction. The garden will cross the “drawing room” of Ponent, conceived as an internal boulevard in the district of Can Sellarès, which will join it to Gavà and above which new constructions are being proposed, intended for public facilities and housing with retail premises on the ground floors.

The improvement of the internal spaces is based on “opening them up”, relocating the ground-floor retail premises. Currently these premises are arranged transversally to the blocks, creating small isolated squares. The project proposes the creation of internal streets that cross the district to permit continuous longitudinal routes by situating the premises in a longitudinal sense to the ends of the housing blocks.

The internal spaces are designed as a single section that has to give continuity to the spaces, which are also unified by the asphalt paving on “roadways” and “sidewalks” together with the paint that defines vehicle traffic spaces and strolling areas for pedestrians. Squares of cobblestone paving and grass have been placed on the continuous asphalt carpet.
