Development project of the “Central Lounge” sector

Enric Batlle i Joan Roig, arquitectos.

Description Technical file

The apparent formal complexity of this public space project arises from a subtle and intentional reflection on the problems caused by the intersection of two highly relevant roadways in the town’s urban structure.
The Central Lounge sector is located at the intersection of two very important roadways for the municipality of Sant Boi de Llobregat, the Santa Creu de Calafell road (C245) and Avenida Josep Mariages. The new development needed to connect these two important thoroughfares, give continuity to calle Baldiri Net and provide services for the new planned constructions, to which a substantial topographical jump between them and the current C245 has to be added. Through the use of a crackle-shaped geometric structure a solution is provided for all of these aspects while also obtaining a unitary image of the sector. This “crackling” creates a landscaping system in which each piece can adopt a highly differentiated character and use according to its functional needs. Small plazas are generated within this great space with a very local and domestic dimension, playgrounds, areas for the elderly and of course landscaped zones like small botanic gardens with indigenous species that require little water. Within this landscaping the tree planting acquires the role of an escort, generating continuous alignments and shade that accompany the user when crossing this sector.
The proposal also recognises the urban importance of the intersection of these two roadways and in this point generates the functional heart of the new park. This new space is highlighted through the creation of a major landmark on a municipal scale, the pergolas.
As the grid of “crackled” gardens nears the intersection between the two roadways, they take off from the floor to form a series of pergolas that conserve the same formal language and the same materials: steel. These pergolas generate a great central square, but they do not do so in the shape of a great continuous space; instead, through their own configuration, they fragment this great void into a suite of spaces of different dimensions, shaded and highly polyvalent. The dimensions and layout of the different spaces are compatible with the staging of small concerts, open-air markets and exhibitions, children’s shows, etc, in a spot of maximum visibility and pedestrian influx within the municipality. The pergola operates by means of a structure of continuous platens made from sheet metal placed on edge. They fold and pleat to generate the different spaces of the square. The cover of the pergolas is a continuous perforated plane that adapts to these turns and twists in the structure like origami and generates the sought-for shade.
