New Txakoli Winery

Luis Alonso y Sergi Balaguer, arquitectos

Description Technical file

The appearance and visibility necessary for the buildings of this winery has been resolved through an exercise in landscape integration which transforms the project into a series of walls, adapted to a challenging topography.

The new winery is located on one of the gentle slopes of Aia, in Guipúzcoa, with splendid views of the towns of Orio, Guetaria and Zarautz, in the hamlet of Eztenaga, surrounded by vineyards of the same denomination of origin.

The rural landscape, which is dominated by the omnipresent green of the surroundings and acts as a frame that contrasts with the backdrop of the Bay of Biscay, necessitates a landscape integration with a specific architectural sensitivity, in pursuit of the harmony that the whole requires.

To this end, the building’s floor plan was designed through five staggered walls of reinforced concrete, five generative curved lines which progressively adapt to the pronounced existing topography. It is therefore a transversal section of the building, which clearly expresses its formal and constructive architectural configuration. Five walls and five platforms which, thanks to their formal and numerical expressivity, become the logo of the “K5 Argiñano” group.

A slate floor which will give character to the harvest of the vines, which lie between forests of chestnut, oak and beech, 300 m above sea level.

The resulting roof platforms are tiled with locally sourced pebbles, for better visual integration. The flooring is resolved by way of large hollow core slabs made of prefabricated concrete, of dimensions that were adapted to the difficulties posed by the existing roadways, with the objective of achieving the highest possible level of spatial and architectural quality.

The partial burial of the constructed volume provides the cellar with a logical and optimal level of environmental stability, with a work temperature that is uniformly controlled thanks to its thermal inertia. The walls, which incorporate pronounced horizontal openings with the aim of framing the appealing views, transform into three lines of light at night which project its image into the distance, like a nocturnal “lighthouse” anchored to the hillside.
