Description Technical file

Various vicissitudes more typical of history than of architecture frame the lengthy and complex process of rehabilitating the old Born Market, which has gone from an intended Provincial Library to a Culture Centre without this having reduced the architectural value of the final result.

The Market of El Born, an emblematic example of 19th-century industrial architecture, was designed in 1874 and finished in 1876, when it assumed the functions of the city’s central market until the year 1977. In 1998 the initiative to build the Provincial Library of Barcelona entailed the excavation of the subsoil, which uncovered the remains of the city destroyed as a consequence of the War of Succession (1714). Subsequently Heritage decided to conserve this archaeological site and finally, in the year 2004, it was decided to transform the old Born market into a Culture Centre for the interpretation of Barcelona’s modern history.

To meet this purpose, the coexistence of the Market with the site was approached as the sum of instances of different historic moments and events, with the primary objective of the intervention being the functional recovery of a complex organism while maintaining consistency with its historical and formal reality. Thus the interior space of the old market is configured as an indoor plaza, a protected space that can be crossed, with the functional programme being the cultural offering not so much of a 19th-century market but of a 21st-century agora.

The project achieves these objectives by adapting its geometric, material and constructional essence to the criteria of the existing architectural ensemble, avoiding any foreign or aggressive formal characterisation of its spaces. In this regard, consistent with the structure of the old market, the ensemble of central spaces is left open and usable like a covered square, an extensive vantage point over the 18th and 19th centuries.

The intervention, in terms of interior design and museography, has successfully sought to introduce its functional programme and make it compatible with the architecture within the framework of a series of premises expressed by the author:

“The Born had to be a monument of iron architecture, but not only a monument.
The Born had to be an archaeological site of historical importance, but not only a site.
The Born had to be a civic centre, with programmes of activities for the city, but not only a civic centre.
The Born had to be a museum in which to display the pieces found in the site, but not only a museum.
The project had to meet and balance all of these needs while respecting and enhancing the architecture.”
