El Pinar Sociocultural Centre

José Miguel Roldán y MercèBerengué, arquitectos.

Description Technical file

The work on the section of this building project, intended for a sociocultural centre, permits understanding the two scales it has to confront in its setting, which involves creating a response to its topography and the formal embodiment of its functional programme.
The El Pinar sociocultural centre ofRubístands on an elongated plot 60 metres in length in an east-west orientation and a strong 52% gradient in its transversal section. The façade giving on to the road junction of the neighbouring road C-1413 is situated 8 metres below that of its opposite façade, which is situated on a plateau, the end of a forested area that forms part of the Archaeological and Natural Heritage Catalogue of the municipality of Rubí. As a consequence of this powerful unevenness, the building has 75% of its total surface underground and abuts on a retaining wall that holds up the foot of the mountain.
The project, which takes up the entire available plot, has one floor and a butterfly shape in the section, which separates its two functional wings. In the east wing there are two storeys in height accommodating an auditorium and above it a nursery school for the district’s children. In the west wing, which is three storeys in height, is a small gym, a series of adult learning classrooms, the exhibition area and the social hall.
In its façade to the street the building displays a solid stone image built from mortar made from pebbles dash in different grey hues and perforated metal sheeting with a fretwork section in an ash colour, while the façade giving on to the forest, with a single storey, becomes a transparent and permeable body. The pillars holding up the roof, in the generous height of the social centre space, are painted to simulate the trees growing outside.
Visually, between the two wings of the building, in white shades and with the compositional aid of a small curtain wall three storeys in height, is the point of permeability between the bottom and top levels of the terrain. This is the interior link between the “downstairs” and “upstairs” doors. This centre, perforated in its architectural void, is occupied by a double space holding the staircases and lifts, operating as a connection between the two blocks situated on either side and representing, in its image and functioning, the small passage like a defile that actually already existed in this place now occupied by the new sociocultural centre.
