Hotel Plaza Vieja

Luis Alonso y Sergi Balaguer, arquitectos

Description Technical file

In the centre of the city of Almería, across from the Cathedral, this exercise in architectural rehabilitation has been undertaken, providing the square with the presence of a new hotel, a restaurant and the Arab baths.

Almería’s Plaza Nueva, the site of the City Hall and with one of its four facades occupied by the monumental Cathedral, has always been the heart of a city marked by its history and its Mediterranean light.

In one of the mansions giving on to this arcaded square, the design was commissioned of a hotel interior of minimal dimensions, barely 10 rooms, together with the restaurant of one of the emerging figures in Andalusian gastronomy, Alejandro, and the Arab baths situated in the hotel basement, which aspire to become the nexus of union between tradition and modernity, in the manner of an urban spa.

The design of the rooms gave priority to the quest for contrast between the tradition of the exposed stone of the facades, the arcades giving on to the square and the use of natural materials such as wood, stucco and marble, with the contemporary image of an open, minimalist layout that seeks to make the most of a reduced space.

Each room is a unique exercise, with privileged vistas of its urban setting and preference given to comfort over other considerations, seeking local references such as the use of Macael marble or the local images projected on the wall and providing a link to the past.

The ground floor accommodates the restaurant space, centred on the square and its relationship with the city, looking for different ways of sitting down and sharing. The restaurant interior is dominated by a great lineal bar counter presiding over the space, accompanied by a large cellar open to the view of the occupants and repeating, in regard to the materials, a composition of similar characteristics to that of the rooms, with the change in the colour characteristics, from white to black.

The basement is occupied by the spa, an intimate space that seeks to charge itself with history and in which the different basins, clad in Macael marble, glow white and contrast with the dark ambience generated by the exposed brick walls. A space designed for calm, quietude and relaxation…
