Sports pavilion and access plaza in Garrucha

Description Technical file

Garrucha is a small fishing town that is now focusing on tourism. Strangled by the municipalities of Vera to the North and Mojacar to the south, its only possibility for expanding is towards the west, to the back of the urban centre. Its growth colonises with residential developments the hillside behind the current town and gradually encroaches on the plain as far as the eye can see. On this plain, next to road ALP-118, a plot has been planned to contain sports facilities (football pitch, sports centre and municipal swimming pool), educational facilities (school) and the Parque de las Palmeras.
The project’s strategic decision was to import a local argument from the nearby territory mutated to the needs of the project. To colonise a piece of the territory in the modus operandi of the “conservatory object”: interrupting the place by surprise through the simple extrusion of its limits and packaging an air-filled, conservatory-style space.
During the day the volume is interpreted as a coloured box with certain reflections of the surroundings depending on the point of view, thanks to the arrangement of the coloured face in the internal part of the external polycarbonate, giving the skin a certain effect of depth. At sunset the range of colours employed (magenta, watery green, warm and intense blue) disembody the volume as it blends into the hues of the sky. The interior is uniformly illuminated through walls and roof, avoiding any direct references to the exterior. During events staged at night, the skin is illuminated with differing degrees of intensity to create a giant luminaire that lights up the external plazas and operates as a landmark in the surroundings.
The commission for designing the access plaza came some time after the pavilion’s building works were completed, and so the only point of reference were the mountains of rubble that thus become the protagonists of the project’s strategy.
The shading and lighting elements of the access space take the form of artificial trees formed from galvanised steel tubes on which a metallic lattice is superposed, formed from embossed sheet metal steps and generic luminaires for the outdoor lighting, and finally sansevieria trifasciata in the solids on top of the rubble, configuring a new landscape of giant flowerpots.
