Congress Hall of Sevilla

Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, arquitecto

Description Technical file

The manner of addressing the appropriate relationship between the new Congress Hall and the existing Trade Fair site became the capital theme of the project given the determination to build a new autonomous building that would at the same time be perceived as an episode connected to the host building.
In accordance with the project’s general strategy, the Congress Hall entailed the construction of two large articulated pieces: a horizontal platform raised above the ground at a sufficient height to allow vehicles through, and a second piece that gently ascends on a ramp to reach the level of that platform.
The ramp piece, which rests on the existing building, configures the necessary transition space between the building and the street. This is a covered outdoor space, an atrium and antechamber to the new building, a space with great potential and one able to respond to requirements that have yet to be defined. In the daytime it is configured as a space for meetings, for relations, the main access to the auditorium, to the exhibitions… at night it is transformed into a great luminous screen, a giant information panel. This access space rises gently to the building’s vestibule situated on the platform holding the different pieces that shape the Congress Hall programme.
Resting on this platform, the different pieces of the programme have been organised: a divisible auditorium with capacity for more than 3,500 seats, catering and restaurant zone, polyvalent rooms and administration, shaping a stratified, permeable and transparent structure in a fluid, continuous space crossed by walkways, ramps and stairs in which the presence of the interior palm tree garden plays an active role in organising the space, clarifying circulations and facilitating the user’s orientation.
The interior space of the great vestibule, which is fluid and festive, constitutes the matter that formalises the north-facing façade on to the city through large glass walls that offer a vigorous and contemporary image. The internal courtyard, with all its attributes, and the atrium, an outdoor transition space between the street and the building, will be the key arguments that will allow the project to fit into the architectural culture of the city of Seville.
