Vivanco, wine shop and tasting room in Briones

Javier Bárcena, Raquel Melgo y Luis Zufiaur, arquitectos

Description Technical file

This project to enlarge the wine shop of the Vivanco Museum in Briones is in line with the goal of achieving a recognisable architecture in a direct and natural manner.

Pulsating in the Vivanco Museum of Briones (La Rioja) is one of the largest wine collections in the world. The first visits reveal a world of beauty set in natural surroundings, an extensive, productive built complex where wine is made and aged, and a monumental house where the wine-making art is experienced and enjoyed. The tour is a subtle and pleasant though erudite and rigorous learning process that is nevertheless entertaining. It is in short the safekeeping of the essence of wine-making throughout its entire process and its artistic representation in the different civilisations.

The intervention in this project consists of enlarging the wine shop, incorporating it into the natural tour of the museum. The reforms are in line with the spirit and quest for an architecture that is recognisable in a direct and natural way so that the visitor can find a route through which to access the architecture, a path towards enjoying it. In this regard, the tempranillo leaves in a wooden lattice envelop the complex while giving it an image that chimes with the vernacular tradition, at the same time allowing for different parts to be added and for the whole to be ultimately articulated within the framework of its functional programme.

The route ends in the tasting room, whose enclosure horizontally frames the landscape of the Sierra de Cantabria in its full magnitude.
