Description Technical file

The application of criteria inherent to a spatial and functional geometry of radical characteristics allows this detached family house to participate in a quality that belongs to those typologies: having access to the garden from all its floors.

The GardenHouse 0.89_M belongs to the classic detached family house typology designed in recent years in different areas described as garden cities, in the functional areas of dormitory towns, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, in this case in the municipality of Sant Cugat del Vallés.

The project for the GardenHouses has allowed its authors to reflect on the evolution of house types located in the urban sprawl generated by the macro-urban effect of metropolitan areas. This investigation emerged from the interest in finding different ways of connecting the house to the garden. The dream of living in a house with a garden, in the garden city, cannot be limited only to the exercise of designing the size of the windows. The GardenHouses propose a housing type that is designed jointly with the garden. Upstairs, downstairs, to the side, behind, within… in the case of the GardenHouse 0.89_M, the house and the garden are wound into each other.

In this project the garden is wound around the house like a scarf. The house is both protected by and connected to the garden perimeter. A ramp starting at the access door to the plot leads to the French window balconies of the house.

Firstly, the ramp guides visitors and uncovers for them the main wooden entrance door of the home and, if they continue to skirt the façade, they reach the outdoor dining terrace, a narrow space situated between the house and the plot’s dividing wall, from which the kitchen can be accessed. They will then find a ramp staircase that leads to the French window of the first floor. From here they can access the rooms of the house, so providing a direct outlet to the garden despite being on the first floor, something that is not always possible in other detached family house typologies. The end of the route is the French window of the study, a small space overhanging the living room, a space that is both garden and house in turn.
