Araba Hotel – Restaurant

Javier Bárcena, Luis Zufiaur y Raquel Mielgo

Description Technical file

In an urban setting of unstructured characteristics, this hotel has been designed with a volumetry that introduces a necessary factor of order and singularity in an exercise of enlarging the existing building.
The town of Ali (Vitoria-Gasteiz) is characterised by a picturesque urban structure that has grown uninterruptedly since the time of nineteen-sixties industrial development.
This new hotel-restaurant integrates very strongly into the context of its urban setting through sensitivity and respect for the existing landscape. Echoing the urban scale as well as the roof profiles of the surrounding houses, the Araba Hotel is built like a set of equal terraced pieces.
The building sitting in this way on its irregular plot maintains an image in keeping with the tradition of the place. On the outside the stone unifies the volumes and the horizontal and vertical landscaping generates its own forest clearing.
Indoors, the external volumetry is extended towards the dining room. Wood provides a touch of warmth and the glazed openings unveil the delicate balance established between the domestic spaces and the urban nature.
