Perro Viejo Restaurant

Juan Pedro Donaire

Description Technical file

This restaurant, situated in the centre of the city of Seville, offers the necessary balance between the decision to conserve the typology inherent to a building with heritage value and the functional need to develop it into a space of modernity.
This restoration and interior design project intended for installing a new restaurant is located in a building situated in the centre of the city of Seville. The main objective of the intervention was to succeed in integrating in a single space the building’s tradition and the necessary functionality of a modern kitchen. The building is organised around a central courtyard on to which all the building’s floors open, covered by a great glass roof light that brings natural light into the interior space.
The materials used in the design of this project, such as wood, metal, glass, acoustic panels, hydraulic tiles or concrete floors turn the premises into a special place in which natural and artificial light have been used to create a warm ambience. On the ground floor a fireplace has been installed next to one of the openings which, as well as helping in the building’s heating and cooling, becomes an icon that attracts passers-by and leads them to the entrance of a welcoming space.
The unique look achieved by the exclusive design of the handrails, luminaires, benches and other furnishing elements considerably enhances the architectural interest of the building’s interior spaces.
With regard to the façade of the existing building, it was refurbished according to the intention of keeping its appearance based on its original openings, using lime mortar and the joinery inherent to a historic building of these characteristics. The openings on the ground floor, which contains the restaurant, are framed in varnished steel plates, maintaining their original texture and marks.
The focus of the project aimed to highlight the importance of some of the unique elements that were already in place, as for example the courtyard with an olive tree as its centrepiece, the original brick walls that embrace it or the recovered external wooden joinery.
