La Melguiza, retail premises in Madrid

Description Technical file

This interior design project uses metaphor as a guiding thread and plot, transforming colour and materiality into an appealing reference to saffron and its historical background.
The developer of the shop proposes the creation of a new shop concept, where the entire content is based around saffron, depicting how something so tiny and light can have such a great value and traditional element.
Adopting these commercial and symbolic characteristics as premises, the designers have sought to incorporate them into their project, with the conditions and characteristics imposed by construction and architectural realities. To this end, they propose a system of hanging lamps and displays, creating a topography of threads throughout the shop and leaving the floor plan clear in order to give the space a greater importance. They are linear elements in a reddish colour, from which transparent boxes are suspended containing lights or products depending on the zone of the shop.
The rest of the shop’s surroundings evoke tradition. This is achieved through colour and construction plan that responds to the typical plan of buildings where saffron was collected and toasted: buildings with a stone floor, whitewashed walls with small holes and ceilings with wooden beams. The small holes covering the walls act as a counterpart to the displays hanging from the ceiling, and there is also a display unit that uses the project’s proposed language.
Outside, a completely transparent façade ensures that the street view of the shop and the topography of the ceiling is complete and appealing.
