Olot and district of the Garrotxa Hospital

Ramon Sanabria + Francesc Sandalinas

Description Technical file

The ultimate goal of this project is to create a relaxed and peaceful environment, using and emphasising the treatment of the architectural solids as a framework for the void, allowing their permanent transfer and connection with the natural setting.
The site chosen for the new Olot hospital is in the Riudaura valley and connects with the city through the avenues of Pla de Dalt and Dr. Bartrina. It slopes sharply in a south-north direction, falling to the Ridaura creek bed and rising with the sierra of Sant Valentí and Sant Miquel del Mont. In essence this is a powerful woodland setting offering unsurpassable vistas to the north and west.
The proposal is for a horizontal, graded building that adapts to the terrain’s natural topography, with each one of the floors in contact with the terrain. The building is articulated by longitudinal east-west strips and north-south “fingers”, creating large landscaped courtyards adapted to the topography.
Conceptually, the project avoids a single built-up volume and instead creates more private sequences and spaces to achieve a suite of convenient and controlled ambiences, far removed from the image of a building with little permeability. Fragmenting the volumes in this way makes the most of the magnificent views and brings the building down to a human scale. The proposal encourages transparency and allows daylight into the building through courtyards and roof lights in all the rooms and corridors.
The main entrance is situated in the top floor of the building where the more public uses and the outpatient services. The assembly hall, cafeteria and non-denominational room are interconnected via a vestibule conceived as a great covered public plaza, with porches connecting the indoor and outdoor space, allowing these spaces to also be used for the nearby city’s other needs. The intermediate floor holds the hospital-related services and inpatient units, with the exterior part of it leading to emergency and the day hospital, thus helping to segregate the users of the different services. All of them enjoy daylight through the courtyards and façade.
Stratifying the uses through the building’s section is crucial in functional and formal terms, clearly and systematically establishing the different connections between entrances and public hospital services.
The facades operate as severies of the actual volumetries, formalised in prismatic concrete volumes. These severies incorporate lightweight materials such as glass and extruded aluminium to maintain an image and weightlessness throughout the complex: glass façades that frame the landscape and determine the external image from the more public areas, such as the entrance plaza and the small copse that configure the south façade viewed from the Riudaura valley.
