Market and Civic Hall

Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra

Description Technical file

Daylight is the protagonist of this large open-plan space in which light and structure come together to address the precise functional requirements of this civic hall.
The new building was constructed on the site on which the old market used to stand. It has a trapezoid ground plan and is attached to a party wall. It has three façades, with the shortest one opening on to Plaza de Colón in whose centre stands the medieval Islamic tower, the symbol and image of the town of Torrent.
The programme for the new building includes the construction of the new market, a high-quality retail area and a supermarket as well as a large civic hall, a public events space for the community’s use. This hybridising of uses, and above all the juxtaposing of spaces, evokes the typological model of the great Italian renaissance buildings, with a great communal hall built above the market, a large-capacity space accessed from the exterior and intended for public use.
The new project requires recessing the current façade line giving on to the square to align it with the adjacent constructions. This aims to highlight and enhance the presence of the tower, the square’s main focal point. At the same time, it proposes a contemporary building inside the historic centre, seeking to achieve a harmonious bond with the pre-existence, a relationship of physical and historical continuity in the town.
The building’s functional and spatial organisation is quite simple: all the vertical communication elements and services are attached to the party wall, situating the main foyer in parallel to Calle Cervantes, a pedestrian street leading to the square and which of course also gives access to the market. This foyer contains a staircase and an escalator accessing all the floors of the building.
The large polyvalent hall can be subdivided into two rooms. It gives on to the square through a large covered terrace. The position of both the staircase and the escalator is such that when reaching the level of the hall, magnificent views of the tower and the square can be enjoyed.
The use of metallic lattices as the essential element of the façades –filtering the views and mitigating direct sunlight—finds its reference in local tradition. The grilles and parapets of the dwellings sketch out an elegant and subtle silver calligraphy, while the gorgeous tiles decorate the jambs of the doors. These elements and materials are present in the new building, interpreted in a contemporary key to allow for a harmonious and appropriate integration into the historic setting of Plaza Colón.
