Ninot Market

José Luis Mateo

Description Technical file

This project to refurbish one of Barcelona’s most characteristic markets retains and repairs its valuable structure, improving its spatial conditions and, most especially, its natural lighting conditions.
he building, constructed in 1928 by the architects Antoni de Falguera and Joaquim Vilaseca, occupies an elongated plot between the streets of Villarroel, Casanova and Mallorca, in the centre of Barcelona’s Ensanche district.
This project’s intervention focuses on four key points: retaining the breathtaking existing structure, improving the accesses, redesigning the façades and roofs and making use of the subsoil. The lateral façades have been redesigned with the aim of integrating the external walls, which now do not jut out any more to occupy a large part of the sidewalk. Work has also been done on façades and roof to allow daylight in while keeping direct solar radiation out in order to prevent it from damaging the food. A perforated slat system was used that regulates the intake of light.
During the day, the building looks opaque on the outside while a continuous light invades its interior. At night, lit up from the inside, the building’s lightness and transparency is highlighted.
To adapt the market to today’s logistical needs and installations, the subsoil was emptied out to generate two underground floors for car parking, a self-service area, a loading bay and storerooms.
The entrances have been reorganised, adapting the floor to the different heights to remove existing changes in level. This has generated a unified space of accesses in the main foyer. From here, users obtain a general overview of the market and can access the lower floor.
