Iberdrola training campus

Alonso, Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados. | Luís Alonso y Sergi Balaguer

Description Technical file

In its strategy, this project uses the erection of a large pergola that, in a skilful play of adaptation to the landscape, personalises the formalisation of its architecture while addressing environmental problems.
With flexibility as the project’s principal strategy, the new Iberdrola Campus situated in San Agustín del Guadalix, Madrid, is committed to giving it a public, sustainable and open character as its essential compositional premise. This project is defined by a great exterior space in the form of a plaza, around which the various buildings in the programme are arranged, all of it covered by a great undulating canopy that protects and shelters it from the elements and transmits the formal and conceptual integrity that the complex requires.
The simplicity of the arrangement, together with separate accesses on a double level, facilitates and enables them to be categorised according to the required level of security. The choice in the buildings was to externalise all the communication cores, whether for the traffic of people, installations or wet cores, allowing for flexibility in any possible future changes in use and considerable distribution simplicity in their interior as well as sustainability based on minimising and adapting the façade surfaces according to orientation to favour proper natural crossed ventilation.
The project adapts to the topography, minimising the effects of possible earth movements and excavations, understanding the campus architecture as a jigsaw or a Meccano in which the communication, service and installation pieces are versatile and always located outside the construction.
In regard to ambient quality and adaptation to the landscape, the project preserves and boosts its adaptation to the setting by retaining the current vegetation. The proposal is concluded with a roof element that integrates the whole into the landscape, enhancing the bioclimatic installation elements. This pergola introduces a necessary and appropriate urban scale into the complex given that it can be seen from the nearby dual carriageway. The pergola contains photovoltaic and thermal elements that provide not only shade for the campus users but also clean energy for the complex.
