Refurbishment of a house between party walls.

Description Technical file

This subtle intervention to refurbish a house in the old town of Sant Feliu de Llobregat could set a new paradigm for architectural intervention through the selective demolition of interior partitions and staircase to improve the building’s energy performance as well as its interior layout.

This is the refurbishment of an old and simple house in the old town of Sant Feliu de Llobregat. The intervention is based on preserving the original composition, layout and structure of the house and the selective demolition of the interior partitions and staircase in order to create a new arrangement that fits the needs of the resident: improved natural lighting and increased energy performance in the building.

The new layout is characterised by being more open-plan, with barely any partitions, and is created using lightweight systems primarily made of wood. The ground floor is a single space that contains the living room, dining room and kitchen. By demolishing part of the forging a double space is freed up, providing height and natural skylight illumination. This act of emptying does not affect the structure in any way, as all of the original wooden beams are preserved, and the wider beam filling where the old staircase used to be is repurposed for the new staircase. The first floor contains a bedroom, a study, a dressing room and a bathroom. All of the rooms give on to the façade and the double space.

The construction project of this refurbishment consists of preserving the existing solutions from the primitive build as much as possible. Only those that have lost their structural capacity have been modified, and the rest of the elements are preserved even if they have been superficially deformed or altered over time. This creates a material contrast between the old and the modern and between the original solutions and finishes in relation to the new ones, showcasing the simplicity of traditional architecture.
