Description Technical file

The Jury’s appraisal:The project begins with a large canopy covering one section of the public space, making the CaixaForum installations visible and helping the building’s entrance, which occupies an existing subterranean structure, stand out. The canopy deftly becomes a large skylight that illuminates the lower spaces occupied by the new programme. The project is a milestone in this combined space thanks to an occupation strategy below the covered plaza, achieving harmony among the interventions.

The new Caixaforum-Seville Cultural Centre seeks to coherently address two always-important issues in interventions on existing buildings (in this case, existing structures): occupation strategy and the need for visibility within a foreseen organisation. The mentioned occupation strategy is based on an analysis of existing spaces and the uses previously foreseen in the so-called “Podium Building” of the Torre Pelli Complex. The already-built structure has inevitably conditioned both the distribution of the programme and the spatial configuration for the different uses. In this way, the main strategy consists of situating a series of relatively autonomous volumes within an existing structure, seeking cohabitation between each one of the actions.

In this line we can point out the arrangement of the exhibition rooms and the auditorium in the only existing spaces which for their height and dimensions allowed them to be accommodated, delimiting them with self-supporting enclosures that prevent conflict with the executed concrete structure. These available spaces are on the basement levels below the access plaza, something that conditioned the entire sequence of accesses and movements along the building. Equally, the cafeteria and administration uses have to be located on the upper levels, seeking the best vistas and lighting conditions.

Moreover, the importance and necessary visibility of the Caixaforum-Seville within this complex led to operations to improve and clarify the entrance. The main entrance to the building takes place under a new awning covering both the access originally foreseen for the basement levels and a new skylight, a source of daylight required for the lower levels, creating a covered plaza situated between the planned rows of trees and permeable to the flow of people who cross the ensemble of constructions.
