The Jury’s appraisal: This transformation of an old workshop stands out for the open and playful interpretation of its programme. Through the articulation of various room-units, the project achieves an interesting domestic landscape with a dual scale. The material selection reinforces the ambiguous nature of the space and gives it character. It is a unique and stimulating exercise in approach and execution.

The brief consisted of transforming an old workshop of 700m2 (10x70m) into a home for a single person. As well as the usual requirements for a dwelling, the programme of needs included a study area and an artistic creation workshop.

Two main objectives were pursued: on one hand, defining spaces on a graspable, human scale, in the context of a unit of large proportions. On the other, as a counterpoint, never losing the perception of being in a unique space with a singular character.

The project suggests a series of varying elements that articulate the space according to the needs of the programme, without using doors. These independent objects – partitions forming straight angles or a stand doubling as a sofa – never enter into contact with the perimeter walls or with the ceiling, preserving the visual continuity of the original open-plan space.

As a complement, the perimeter of the unit was manipulated in the contact areas with the exterior, shifting the line of joineries towards the interior. This creates two large separation elements the bring in air, light and vegetation from the outside: the triangular terrace and the small garden.

The aim was not so much to create a domestic but rather a domesticated space, like a wild animal that has learned to live with you but will never cease to be wild.
