The Jury’s appraisal:Despite its limited resources, this project resolves the programme requirements elegantly and efficiently. The plot is organised by a spatial sequence that begins at the entrance with the service areas and extends through a large garden, ending at the training centre building. The layout of this building is also highly efficient, with a large polyvalent central space flanked by offices on one side and an open-air covered classroom on the other. The design combines traditional construction methods and materials with an innovative metallic structure that covers the entire volume and extends over the main entrance façade. A highly intelligent solution for this climate, as the enormous ventilated ceiling creates an open-air meeting point that protects people, as well as the building, from the intense sunlight and rain that are typical of the area.

The project’s goal is to build a professional training centre for the women of the old village of Boassa, currently a district situated on the outskirts of Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. This facility is intended for providing training mainly in sewing but also in basic literacy for many of the attendees, plus in the running of a kitchen garden.

The programme requested by the promoter, Burkina Women, consists of an open-plan, polyvalent hall for a minimum of 40 pupils, a covered outdoor classroom, an office for the director, a storeroom for material used in the training and another one for tools, a bathroom, a kitchen, a well, a gatehouse and a kitchen garden area and another one planted with Moringa (moringa oleifera) for its medicinal and nutritional properties.

It was decided to group the training hall and its storeroom, the office and the bathrooms into a main body. This volume is situated at the back of the plot, opposite the entrance, liberating as much space as possible for the planting areas (kitchen garden and moringas). The entire unit is surrounded by a shaded terrace, especially extensive in the main north façade, and part of the porch is fitted out as an outdoor classroom in the east-facing side. This space becomes the protector of the main building, since it is the orientation of the prevailing winds in the rainy season. The rest of the programme is concentrated in the access area of the plot and takes the shape of two small volumes that make use of the existing enclosure as well as its original entrance space.

The building stands on a generous concrete platform that protects it from damp and allows it to be circled. Thick, 40-cm load-bearing walls were erected in adobe (raw earth bricks) that underpin the load of the upper roof and increase the room’s thermal and acoustic insulation. This space is first covered in a sequence of lowered vaults made from BTC (compacted earth blocks), supported by in-situ-reinforced concrete beams with a 7-metre span. The building is crowned with galvanised fretted sheet metal affixed to a three-dimensional structure in tubular metal with a circular section. This metallic structure is conveniently anchored in the reinforced concrete beams and, at the requirement of the calculations, become a sort of composite beams. The upper sheet metal creates a ventilated roof and protects the construction below it from direct sunlight and the strong rainfall in summer. The internal adobe walls are finished in lime mortar, with the exteriors and vaults rendered in different hues of clay taken from nearby quarries, giving the main building an attractive and eye-catching image.
