The Jury’s appraisal:An austere, flexible and clever work. A single material, normally concealed when used in construction, becomes the restrained expression of the exhibition’s backdrop. The galvanised steel profiles structure the space, defining heterogeneous matrices that use aggregation systems to organise the displayed documents. Through great ingenuity, the inherent lightness of the chosen material allows the space to adapt to its usage. The common theme of the project is ‘a space for spaces in time’: the door is the threshold or barrier, the halls are galleries or auditoriums, etc. It sets an example through the specificity of the ephemeral: time, mobility, recycling, flexibility and systems.

Spain is one of the countries where the impact of the economic crisis has most affected the practice of architecture. There must be few places in the world where so many buildings were erected in such a short period of time, in many cases without a purpose other than to feed the voracious driver of the economy. The absence of reflection on the need or currency of such works meant that many were abandoned owing to the fact that finishing or maintaining them was not economically viable. Their presence on Spanish territory means a collection of unfinished buildings that exemplify the nonsense of the past few years, when the consideration of the time factor was subtracted form the formula for making architecture.

The “Unfinished” exhibition presented at the Venice Biennale by the Spanish Pavilion seeks to focus attention on the process rather than the result in order to uncover project strategies that emerged from the optimistic approach to the built environment.

The show features examples of architectures produced in recent years, born of renunciation and of economy of means, devised for evolving and adapting to future needs and putting their trust in the beauty of the passage of time. Projects that understand architecture as something unfinished, in constant evolution and at the service of the human being, at a time of uncertainty in regards to the profession that makes its consideration in the present day a matter of relevance.
