Ohla Eixample Hotel

Estudi Isern Associats

Description Technical file

Technology and design come together here in an attempt to nuance and sympathetically complete the project for a hotel in the ever-fragile environment of Barcelona’s Ensanche district.

In answer to the challenge posed by the urban pre-existence in terms of construction elements as well as maximum height and the fit with the surrounding urban landscape, a façade was designed comprised of very deep vertical and horizontal elements that modulate a blurred vertical rhythm to soften the impact of the number of stories in the building, a rhythm broken up on five occasions by wooden boxes acting as balconies. Ceramic was chosen for its execution, a material with strong links to the city’s history, for which an added value was sought: music.

With the help of Cerámica Cumella and the IAAC, an algorithm was invented based on sound that creates a pattern that is then etched into the ceramic surface, which is then extruded. This process created an endless number of pieces, each one unique and different but all of them with the same strokes.

The choice for this piece was the music composition "Vivaldi Recomposed" by Max Richter, in this case Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which adds a touch of modernity. The same system was employed to create the great ceramic mural which occupies the ground floor, starting in reception and reaching the end of the restaurant.

Technology has allowed for hydraulic jacks. This system divides the building into two parts, leaving everything above street level completely separated from the basement to achieve the degree of comfort and convenience required by a hotel.
