Description Technical file

This unique building in Barcelona intended for hotel use is the result of a complex functional programme forming part of an architectural project that very skilfully combines plasticity with respect for a fragile urban setting.

The building is located on a plot included in the scope of the General Modification of the Metropolitan Plan (MPGM), which has the goal of renovating the industrial areas of the Poblenou (the 22@ IT activities district) of Barcelona.

This project is for a 4-star superior (4*S) hotel of 235 rooms for the SB hotels chain and sets out a new hotel concept. The building consists of 3 basement storeys, ground floor, 8 floors of rooms and a roof floor. Basement floors -2 and -3 are intended for parking, technical and store rooms. Basement floor -1 holds lounges, meeting rooms and a large dining room for the general public. Some partially covered courtyards allow daylight into the rooms. The walls of these courtyards are covered in vegetation, encroaching right from the ground-floor outdoor space. The floor also contains the kitchen and personnel zone.

The ground floor holds the hotel’s main entrance, with the reception, foyer and a bar zone. It is accessed through the main entrance under a great entrance porch that allows hotel customers to leave their cars for brief periods. On the side opposite the guests’ entrance is the ramp leading to the car park and the staff access zone. The space surrounding the building on the back part, giving on to the old Pons factory, operates as the bar’s terrace while also creating a space integrated into the rest of the open spaces of the city block. The ensemble of developments of the outdoor spaces forms part of an urban continuum for the public use of the courtyards contained within the city block. Floors 1 to 8 above ground mostly hold rooms. Floor 8 generates a perimeter terrace for a series of suites. The top floor is home to the swimming pool, solarium, gym and bar and terrace zones with great views over the city. The façade chosen seeks to give the building a singular image while addressing issues such as functionality, sunlight protection and urban scale.

The four façades have been given the same treatment, dominated by the vertical component of the room window openings. The surface treatment was obtained through large-format panels with a microcement finish in light hues. The various textures are differentiated according to how a geometric etching on each panel is reproduced. Each window’s geometry is completed with a piece running perpendicular to the façade, which varies its position on either side of the window depending on the floor. This piece is fitted with a system that lights up the building by means of an LED strip. The façade technology is based on large openings of glass curtain wall on the ground floor and ventilated façade on the standard floors.
