Palencia Courtroom

Description Technical file

This interesting refurbishment of the Palencia Law Court is characterised by the tight superposition of a new raised volumetric body, revitalising the existing one in a contemporary language.

A refurbishment and comprehensive reform was carried out on the building of the Palencia Law Court to adapt it to the current needs of the Ministry of Justice.
The functional programme of the courtrooms was adjusted to comply with the set of regulations demanded by the new Technical Building Code, addressing aspects such as accessibility for disabled people, evacuation and energy efficiency. The intervention sought to give new value to the current building, fully preserving its four facades up to cornice level, replacing and improving the joinery on windows and cleaning up and treating the stone and brick.
The third floor and the tiled sloping roof, above the first stone cornice and with far lower quality than the rest of the building, were replaced with a new, lighter, airier volume that tends to blend into the sky thanks to its material quality, highlighting the finest part of the existing building.
Permeability is achieved through a skin of perforated metal lattice that protects the glazed façade from solar radiation but allows daylight to flood through and preserves the views from the landscape office situated on the third floor. In this way, the new upper body acquires a neutral and transparent character, looking disembodied above the cornice during the day and operating as a luminous lantern at night.
The spirit of the intervention links up with a now widespread contemporary tradition of dealing with existing buildings in a way that revitalises them, creating tight superpositions or additions of new bodies in a modern language to help reactivate and enhance the inherited part.
