Description Technical file

Refurbishing this cultural space represents a notable opportunity for implementing approaches such as economy of means, energy efficiency, flexibility and durability. These actions acquire sense from the moment they are aimed at giving the facility the highest possible levels of functionality and convenience.

The civic centre, previously known as Espai Felip II, constituted an old medium-sized theatre hall within the premises of the Neighbours’ Association of Barcelona’s Congrés-Indians district. Over time it became obsolete, since no updating whatsoever had been carried out on it.
The project is defined by rational and austere characteristics and simplicity in the choice of construction materials. The new polyvalent space features an architecture in a neutral language that gives the starring role to the interior social and cultural activity and to the outdoor public space, which has also been remodelled.

The theatre is a unitary, simple volume situated between party walls, leaving one façade exposed to the square. From the point of view of the building’s image, it is designed as a large canvas of vertical
double-order elements that organise and regulate the openings; laterally the headwalls are understood as uniform enveloping elements.
The building’s programme is organised over four floors: three above ground, corresponding to the main and more public programme, and one below ground, under the stage, intended for dressing rooms and storeroom.
The upper floors contain classrooms and spaces for meetings and civic activities. Internally, the polyvalent hall with retractable tiered seating is suitable for any kind of activity. The space under the roof contains the installations. Access is from the square on Calle Felipe II.
