Atlantis gastrobar

FAD Awards finalist 2019  Interior design
Description Technical file

The Jury’s appraisal: A small establishment of seafood and market-fresh tapas, in itself conceived as a fresh contemporary object and completed through considerable economy of means, opens up on to the street and catches the eye through its formal radicality. A white backdrop enhances the forceful blue of the bar counter, the veritable centre of the experience.

The Atlantis gastrobar is situated in Barcelona’s Sant Antoni district. This small 20-mū establishment offers seafood and market-fresh tapas. It opened in November 2018 upon completing a project that lasted 3 months and involved 15 professionals.

The challenge in our architectural and interior design work was to give these very small premises a unique and contemporary look, both indoors and on the façade, and to make the most of the space to enhance the actual gastronomic experience through the painstaking care taken with the details. Conceived in itself as a contemporary object, with a nostalgic look back at the small fresh-produce shops in the district, the Atlantis gastrobar is a space opening on to the street that attracts attention for its formal and aesthetic radicality. The image of the establishment recalls the sea, the mythical island of Atlantis, its protecting god Poseidon and his famed trident.

The establishment’s interior, like an old fish shop, is dominated by a semi-circular bar counter made from navy blue artisan brick clad in white tiles. This undulating geometry allows the space to be optimised to the maximum, creating a balance between the work and food manipulation zone and the dining zone. In addition, modifying the angle of the back wall means gaining space for creating a toilet for people with reduced mobility while adding a second washing-up area and more storage spaces.

The modular façade is divided into three parts: a first one that allows the patrons to go in and out and the other two, which are on the concrete bench and are visually tied to the interior and exterior of the space, thus connecting the premises with the street and the district. Opening up the metallic joinery (worked bespoke for the site) also allows us to create some intimate zones for diners.
