Somiatruites Hotel

Xavier Andrés

Description Technical file

The primary strategy of this interesting project is adapting this hotel’s design to its predecessors with regard to landscape and industrial activity.

The Hotel Somiatruites project belongs to two brothers, a chef and an architect, who aim to follow a path where cuisine and architecture can transmit common values to a neighbourhood, a city and a specific sociocultural context.

The project began in 2013 with the transformation of an old tannery in the Rec de Igualada neighbourhood into a restaurant. In Rec, located between the river and the ramparts, large tanneries and small riverside orchards have existed side by side for over five hundred years. While there are still tanneries here producing what is considered to be some of the world’s highest-quality leather, a series of crises have left large sections of architectural heritage unused.

One of the project’s premises was to facilitate a neighbourhood regeneration while preserving its links to history. The hotel is an evolution of the restaurant, catering to leather companies in need of a place to house their clients.

Hotel Somiatruites emerges with a will to integrate into the neighbourhood’s architecture in a sustainable fashion, and as a part of a larger gastronomic project. The building is constructed as a lightweight metallic mesh that preserves the old tannery in its original state and extends over the top of it, separated by a line of shadow that contrasts with the existing volume while integrating the extension into it. The façade is defined by a series of lattices that provide sun cover and are updated versions of the drying racks found in old tanneries. The entire roof is an orchard, bringing together two of the original elements of the Rec district (orchards between tanneries).

Inside, leather, wood and light are the necessary tools to generate comfortable, welcoming and flexible spaces that adapt to guests’ requirements. The fact that a large proportion of stays are business-related means that the rooms can function not just as rooms but also as lounges and meeting rooms thanks to a system that conceals the bed on the ceiling and a table that also disappears, creating a space that is transformable and dynamic.
