Block of flats in Barcelona’s Méndez Vigo arcade

Alonso-Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados

The Méndez Vigo arcade was built in 1868 inside the block formed by the streets of Consell de Cent, Aragó, Pau Claris and Roger de Llúria; it is one of the most emblematic in the Eixample together with Permanyer arcade, which dates from 1864 and was the first to be built. Both constitute the best example of the English-style arcade consisting of houses consisting of ground and first floor with ample gardens, of which up to 46 were built in the new district of Barcelona. They are the only two arcades that have remained faithful to the original idea as regards height, style of the constructions and width of the street. The arcades were introduced by their owners and developers into the Cerdà Plan in order to increase (still further! as all four sides of the blocks had been closed instead of the two originally planned by the engineer) the possibility of building up the block, irremediably eliminating the interior gardens in order to build on them.
