Headquarters for the Pedro Barrié de la Maza Foundation

Luis M. Mansilla y Emilio Tuñón, arquitectos

FAD Award 2007  Interior design

The intervention on the headquarters of the Foundation is the negation of architecture as something immovable. Here, instead, it is understood as a phenomenon that is clearly connected with mobility and the capacity for transforming the space and its possibilities of use. Behind a façade that has been conserved as a simple stage backdrop are the minimum elements necessary to ensure this transformability of the space, among which is undoubtedly the battery of lifts that ensures vertical mobility. From top to bottom, the Foundation houses four different storeys characterised by their differing capacity for transformation. The top level operates at certain moments as a room for musical or stage activities and seats a hundred and sixty people. However, it is also a place for small or large meetings, seminars or discussions and perhaps even workshops; the two storeys immediately below house rooms adapted for exhibitions or events. Lastly, the fourth space, at street level, houses the space for the activities requiring the most space.
